Once a traditional cattle ranch, Ewaso Enclave Conservancy has evolved into a conservation-driven landscape, where a limited number of cattle are thoughtfully integrated into the ecosystem. Today, Suyian represents a new model — blending progressive conservation with community-led initiatives to create a space where people, livestock, and wildlife coexist.
Across Laikipia, active cattle ranching harmonises traditional pastoralism with modern conservation and regenerative agriculture. Livestock graze alongside elephants, lions, and endangered species such as the reticulated giraffe and Grevy’s zebra. Many ranches operate as conservancies, using rotational grazing and holistic land management to preserve habitats, improve soil health, and sustain biodiversity.
At Ewaso Enclave, you’re invited to join herdsmen on foot as they guide cattle across the land — an immersive experience that reveals how conservation and livestock production can work hand in hand.
Local Maasai and Samburu communities are central to this model, combining ancestral knowledge with sustainable practices. The result is a thriving landscape that supports livelihoods, restores ecosystems, and strengthens Laikipia’s conservation future.
